Does your student love a challenge? Are they passionate about math? Students entering 7th and 8th grade can choose to take higher-level math courses. Completing these courses will allow them to enroll in more math classes in high school, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and prepare to earn college credit before graduating from high school.
Course Descriptions
7th Grade: Math 7/8
Math 7/8 combines content from 7th and 8th grade into one school year, allowing students to enroll in Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Because it combines two years of learning into one academic year, Math 7/8 is a more rigorous and challenging course that moves at a quicker pace than a traditional math course.
8th Grade: Algebra 1
Completing Algebra 1 puts students in the strongest possible position when they enter high school, allowing them to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes and earn college credits. Because Algebra 1 is be a rigorous, fast-paced learning experience, there may be additional effort and work required to do well. Students who take Algebra 1 instead of Math 8 will receive additional support to make sure they learn all the critical content that would normally be taught in Math 8.
Open Enrollment and Student Support
We encourage all students to consider enrolling in these classes—including multilingual learners (MLL) and students with disabilities. E.L. Haynes believes that all students should have access to rigorous academic courses that boost learning and growth. To help make sure every student can access these learning experiences, this course is open to all students and families.
Math 7/8 and Algebra 1 are both fast-paced courses that may require additional effort. To help set students up for success, every student enrolled in Math 7/8 and Algebra will receive additional support, including family meetings and learning resources, to make sure they successfully keep up with the pace of the class. Our teaching teams are ready to work with you and your student!
