On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the Honorable Dr. Miguel Cardona, U.S. Secretary of Education, visited E.L. Haynes High School and Elementary School.
It was a great way to kick off Women’s History Month. As he said prior to his visit, “Today I am visiting E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in D.C. E.L. Haynes is named after Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes, who taught in D.C. for almost 50 years, was the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics, and the first woman chair of the DC School Board.”
While at E.L. Haynes, he met with school leaders, chatted with students, visited multiple classrooms, and interviewed some of our youngest learners.
We were so excited to welcome Secretary Cardona to E.L. Haynes. We showed him how our teachers support every students’ learning needs through small group instruction, our co-teaching model, WIN (What I Need) Blocks, 4th grade English Language Arts lessons, music instruction and our early childhood education program.
