May is National P.E. and Sports Month! It’s the time when educators, families, and students get together to recognize how valuable physical activity and a healthy lifestyle are to everybody. This month we are highlighting our Fall Student-Athletes of the Week: Destiny Amuzie (Varsity Volleyball), Chris Gamez (Varsity Soccer), Jessica Marroquin (Varsity Soccer), and Omar Campos Peraza (Varsity Soccer).
We also want to let parents know that registration starts June 1 for fall sports. If your child would like to participate in fall sports or if you have any questions feel free to reach out.
Meet our Fall Student-Athletes of the Week
Jessica Marroquin – Varsity Soccer
Jessica had an incredible start to the Fall season. She scored several goals as the Lady Mountain Lions routed Paul PCS 7-0 in their first match of the season. Throughout the season, she maintained a positive attitude in the classroom, at practices, and in matches—and it paid off handsomely. Congratulations to Jessica, who had an impressive season!
Omar Campos Peraza – Varsity Soccer
Omar had a fantastic debut to start the Fall season, modeling excellence through his determination and effort across the field. Omar had a spectacular defensive game, winning challenges and stifling many scoring opportunities—an excellent conclusion for this senior team captain. Omar possessed an excellent display of leadership and sportsmanship throughout the season!
Destiny Amuzie – Varsity Volleyball
Destiny demonstrated leadership and commitment to her team throughout the volleyball team’s first home win this year. She served great and led the team in digs as well as kills in the three-set match and win versus Seed PCS. Destiny played stellar defense as she flew around the court to make plays and support her teammates. In addition, Destiny had a 100% practice attendance rate for the season. Go Destiny!
Chris Gamez – Varsity Soccer
Cris had a phenomenal week in September, scoring three goals and dominating the midfield. Against Capital City PCS, Cris scored two goals, including a beautiful free kick. During the E.L. Haynes win over The Field School, he added his third goal of the week with a beautiful curling shot to the upper corner. Chris served as a senior leader on the team and we’re so proud of his heart and hustle!
Thank you for being a part of our school’s athletic program. We know that participation in athletics promotes wellness and develops the whole child: body, mind, and spirit. If you don’t know what sport to play, contact Brent Bass (bbass@elhaynes.org), Athletics Director, to talk through your student’s options.
